Internet Research & CAQDAS in Serious Crime Analysis

The amount of electronically available qualitative data (text, image, audio, video) to be processed in the cycle of analysis is overwhelming in complex international crime cases and will be growing in the future due to ICT developments and expanding Internet resources. IJA-Forum is in dialogue with key actors in the field of international crime analysis to identify the need for continuous learning of state of the art qualitative research methods.

IJA-Forum prepares workshops and training courses in two related fields:

A) Methods and Tools for Internet Research and Analysis

- data mining from the visible and invisible net,

- monitoring web sites,

- analysis of social networks and other web spaces.

B) Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Softwares (CAQDAS)

- introduction and use of QDA softwares (e.g. Atlas.ti, QDA Miner/WordStat, NVivo) which allow to analyse huge amounts of qualitative data efficiently,

- combining qualitative with quantitative methods, showing patterns in qualitative data based on statistical analysis,

- linking analytical results with network or GIS softwares and other visualisation tools.

The first events are planned to take place in Oktober 2010. The workshop and training programmes will be published soon.
